Former Ankeny and Iowa State quarterback JJ Kohl is headed to Appalachian State.
The 6-foot-7, 250-pound redshirt freshman announced his decision via social media on Wednesday.
“Excited to announce my commitment to App State!” Kohl tweeted on X.
Kohl was a two-time all-stater at Ankeny, where he passed for 4,208 yards and 42 touchdowns in his career. He helped the Hawks to a runner-up finish in Class 5A as a junior in 2021.
Rated a four-star quarterback by all four major recruiting outlets, Kohl was ranked as a top-10 quarterback nationally by ESPN (No. 8) and Rivals (No. 9). He was tabbed the No. 3 player in the state by 247Sports Composite.
Kohl played in three games at Iowa State as a true freshman in 2023. He completed 9-of-11 passes for 23 yards and ran six times for 32 yards.
Appalachian State has competed in the FBS and the Sun Belt Conference since 2014. The school is located in Boone, N.C.
The Mountaineers posted a 5-6 record this season under coach Shawn Clark, who was released from his contract following his fifth year with the program. Director of Athletics Doug Gillin hired Dowell Loggains to become the 23rd head coach in program history on Dec. 7.
“I can’t wait to get to work with coach Loggains!” Kohl said.
Before serving as South Carolina’s offensive coordinator the last two seasons, Loggains was an assistant for two years at his alma mater, Arkansas, after spending 16 years in the NFL (2005-20) with time as an offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach for the Tennessee Titans (2010-13), Cleveland Browns (2014), Chicago Bears (2015-17), Miami Dolphins (2018) and New York Jets (2019-20).
