The Ankeny wrestling team tuned up for Saturday’s Bob Sharp Invitational with a 62-14 victory over visiting Dowling Catholic on Thursday.
The Hawks raised their dual-meet records to 4-2 in the CIML Conference and 10-4 overall.
“We knew it was going to be a short night,” said Ankeny coach Jack Wignall. “They’ve got some kids who were out with influenza.”
Ankeny built a commanding 41-0 lead midway through the meet. The Hawks began the night with four consecutive falls, then won two of the next three matches by forfeit–sandwiched around a technical fall by Jacob Schlee at 190 pounds.
Dowling avoided a shutout when Brady Hagan recorded a fall at 285. He pinned Jack Dorfler in 3 minutes 23 seconds.
After the Maroons got a technical fall by Cruz Gannon at 106, teammate Jack Wallukait followed with a 9-2 decision over Ben Walsh at 113.
“We lost three matches, and two of them should have been highly contested,” Wignall said. “We kind of didn’t wrestle our best in those matches, so that was kind of disappointing. We lost to some ranked kids but we’re ranked too, and those are important matches for seeding at the state tournament.”
Ankeny then closed out the meet with a fall, two more forfeits and an 8-4 decision by Aiden Winkie at 138.
Saturday’s tournament is slated to begin at 10 a.m. Indianola, Linn-Mar (Marion) and Norwalk will be among the teams in the field.
