Former Ankeny Centennial boys’ basketball player Reece Robinson has been named the Horizon League’s Freshman of the Week after helping Cleveland State extend its winning streak to 12 consecutive games, tied for the second-longest in the country.
Robinson averaged 10 points and seven rebounds per game in helping his team to a 2-0 week with home victories over Detroit Mercy and Green Bay. The Vikings are now 10-1 in conference play (16-6 overall) and remain in first place in the Horizon League standings.
Robinson set a new career-high with 14 points in Saturday’s win over Green Bay. He finished 4-for-7 from the field and made two of his three attempts from behind the arc, including a key 3-pointer with under 4 minutes to go that kick-started the Vikings’ late run to put the game away.
Robinson also grabbed 11 rebounds. He recorded his third double-double of the season.
Robinson added six points and three rebounds in 19 minutes of action against Detroit Mercy on Wednesday. For the week, Robinson finished at 58 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range.
This is Robinson’s first league weekly award and the sixth weekly award for a Cleveland State student-athlete this season.
Robinson played at Centennial as a sophomore before moving to Ohio when his father, Daniyal, was named the head coach at Cleveland State. He played his final two years at Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland, where he helped the team to a state championship in his senior season.
Robinson is currently averaging 5.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.
