The CIML Conference basketball champions could be crowned this week.
The top-ranked Johnston girls’ squad clinched at least a share of the title with a 69-33 win over Valley on Friday. The Dragons will host No. 4 Ankeny Centennial on Tuesday and can secure the outright championship with a victory.
On the boys’ side, No. 2 Valley held on for a 52-51 triumph at Johnston, despite scoring just two points in the fourth quarter. The win allowed the Tigers to remain a game and a half ahead of No. 6 Waukee.
The Warriors will host Urbandale on Tuesday before hosting a showdown against Valley on Friday. The Tigers can clinch at least a share of the crown by defeating Waukee, but the Warriors could move into a tie for first place with a pair of wins this week.
Waukee stayed in the title chase with a 62-41 win over Ankeny Centennial on Friday, getting 22 points and nine rebounds from junior Evan Jacobson. But Jacobson sprained his ankle late in the game and did not play in the Warriors’ 70-69 loss at No. 8 Council Bluffs Lincoln on Saturday.
Valley will host a rematch against Waukee on Feb. 20.
