Ankeny track standout Ethan Zuber showed on Thursday that he’s already in mid-season form.
Zuber won the 1,600 with a time of 4:12.75 in the IATC Indoor Championships at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center in Ames. He edged runner-up Owen Wolfe of Dowling Catholic by .25 seconds.
Zuber met the Blue Oval Standard for the Drake Relays. He nearly matched his time of 4:11.94 that he posted at last year’s Class 4A state meet, where he placed second in the event.
Zuber’s teammate, Ike Smith, took sixth in the 1,600. He was clocked in 4:25.62.
Ankeny’s Hayden Carlson placed third in the 60 hurdles in 8.17 seconds. Cael Woods of Ankeny Centennial finished fourth in 8.20.
Carlson also teamed up with Landon Pote, Sam Madsen and Gavin Wise for a runner-up finish in the shuttle hurdle relay. The Hawks were clocked in 32.91.
Woods helped the Jaguars to a fifth-place finish in that event. He combined with Sawyer Goble, Owen George and Gavin Matheny to post a time of 34.01.
Centennial lost a close race in the distance medley relay, losing to Waukee by just .19 seconds. The foursome of Noah Ross, Joel Neith, Woods and Cohen Moll placed second in 3:37.58.
The Hawks placed fifth in that event in 3:39.00. That team consisted of Finn McClure, Sam Sandvig, Tate Brownsberger and Nick Robie.
Brownsberger and Robie also ran on Ankeny’s sixth-place 4×400 relay. They teamed up with Smith and Zuber to post a time of 3:30.01.
Centennial placed seventh in the 4×800 relay. The quartet of Brayden Vander Wilt, Jack Behrens, Mark Nelson and Corbin Vander Weerdt was clocked in 8:19.60.
