Mady Postma recorded a brace in the first half, and the second-ranked Ankeny Centennial girls’ soccer team went on to post an 8-0 victory at Mason City in a non-conference game on Thursday.
It was the first two goals of the season for Postma, a sophomore midfielder.
“It felt really good, especially since I haven’t scored yet this season,” said Postma. “And it felt good to keep the goals rolling for the team.”
Both of Postma’s goals came from distance.
“I had a lot of trust in my ability because we have been staying after (practice) and taking shots,” Postma said. “And you just have to let it rip sometimes.”
Ava Martin also scored twice and added an assist for the Jaguars, who are now 7-1 on the season. They won their fourth game in a row while posting their seventh shutout.
Martin now leads the team with six goals and five assists. She has 38 career goals, just three shy of the school record.
Adeline Kroska, Addison Fair and Emily Conger each scored a goal in the win. Emmarie Becker and Evie Boyle each added an assist.
The loss ended a three-game winning streak for the Riverhawks, who dropped to 6-3.
“We came home with a quality team win with every healthy player getting significant time on the field,” said Centennial coach Chris Allen. “In addition to the win, we also came home healthy, which is great.”
Allen was happy with the way his team found multiple ways to score.
“The defense stayed connected to the attack, maintaining involvement and communication as we kept the pressure on their half,” he said. “We manifested diverse ways to score, including free kicks, throw-in (passes), and other ways built from our game objectives. We were really pleased with the mentality throughout the match, and credit to Mason City for never giving up.”
Postma was pleased, too.
“I feel like we came out strong and kept playing strong through the whole game,” she said. “We never became complacent.”
Centennial will host a CIML Conference game against No. 3 Valley (8-2-1) on Tuesday.
