The Ankeny boys’ tennis team earned its second victory of the season on Thursday with a 6-5 win at Urbandale.
The Hawks won four of the six singles matches to take a 4-2 lead. Dylan Victor won in straight sets at the No. 1 position, and so did Garrett Weichers at No. 2, Grady Schlosser at No. 3 and Trent James at No. 6.
Ankeny has struggled in doubles play all season, and the Hawks needed to win at least two of the five doubles matches to secure the victory. And their top two teams came through with a pair of straight-set wins.
Victor and Weichers rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 1. Schlosser teamed up with Michael Black for a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 2.
The J-Hawks won all three matches that went to a decisive third set, but it wasn’t enough to come away with the victory.
“It’s been a little frustrating to win a first set easy, then lose several matches in third-set tiebreakers,” said Ankeny coach Ron Miller. “I really don’t focus on wins and losses as much as individuals. My philosophy has always been that if each individual does his best and improved over the season, the wins will take care of themselves.”
Ankeny finished 2-6 in the CIML Conference and improved to 2-7 overall. Urbandale’s records dropped to 1-6 and 3-10.
The Hawks will compete in a Class 2A district tournament on Wednesday at Iowa City High.
