Friday wasn’t the best day for the Ankeny Centennial girls’ tennis team to face one of the state’s top squads.
The Jaguars, who were without three varsity regulars for the second straight meet, traveled to Urbandale and suffered a 10-1 loss in a non-conference meet. They dropped to 2-2 on the season.
“Unfortunately, we just didn’t have a good night,” said Centennial coach Emily Phommachack. “Again, we did not have our full squad. We did the best we could stepping up, but just couldn’t finish the points.”
Centennial’s lone victory came at No. 4 doubles, where the duo of junior Tayler Bloom and freshman Claudia Guan posted a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Jordan Henderson and Reese Dial.
“Those two talked strategy with one another and had some great volleys,” Phommachack said.
Urbandale (4-0) won all six of the singles matches in straight sets. The J-Hawks’ winners included Brooke Dannenfeldt, Mylea Cole and Emily DeDoncker, who are all multi-sport athletes.
Urbandale has dominated its last three opponents after opening the season with a 6-5 victory at Dowling Catholic on April 5.
