Ankeny senior Drake Shadwick carded a 14-over-par 85 and is tied for 69th place after Monday’s opening round in the boys’ Class 4A state golf meet at Davenport Country Club.
Shadwick had seven pars, eight bogeys and three double bogeys.
“Today was a good learning experience for Drake, and I think (Tuesday) the nerves will be more under control,” said Ankeny coach Mike Weddingfeld. “Davenport Country Club is a very challenging course with big undulating greens that are difficult so even though Drake played a practice round on Sunday, it took some time today to get some putts to start dropping for him. Drake did not play bad; he just put himself in some places on the golf course that caused him to make more bogeys than we liked.”
Shadwick started his round on the back nine and was 12-over after the first 11 holes. He then made a par on five of his last seven holes.
“I definitely finished solid,” said Shadwick. “I feel like I just didn’t hit the ball as well as I wanted to at a very tough course. My putting could’ve definitely been better as well.”

Cal Martineau of Dubuque Wahlert shot a 1-under 70 to take the first-round lead. Henry Sobaski of Cedar Rapids Prairie and Avery Van Zelderen of Dallas Center-Grimes each shot a 71 and trail by a stroke.
Dallas Center-Grimes posted a 294 total to lead the team standings. Prairie sits in second place after shooting a 298, followed by Wahlert with a 300.
Shadwick will again tee off from No. 10 at 10:18 a.m. on Tuesday.
“Drake handled himself very well today and has a great attitude for Tuesday so we are hoping for an improvement in the score, but either way it is a great experience on a really beautiful golf course,” Weddingfeld said.
