Valley boys blank Hawks, wrap up outright Central Conference title

May 2, 2018 by Dan Holm

The Valley boys’ tennis team is a perennial contender for the Class 2A state title.

On Tuesday, the Tigers had a chance to wrap up a different title–the outright CIML Central Conference crown.

That proved to be a bad situation for visiting Ankeny as the Hawks suffered their first shutout loss of the season, dropping an 11-0 decision.

“They are a very talented team and from what we have been put up against, I believe they are one of the best teams we have played,” said Ankeny senior Logan Scheer. “I’m not mad about how I played personally or how many of my teammates played.”

Valley finished 5-0 in the conference and improved to 10-0 overall. Ankeny’s records dropped to 1-4 and 5-4.

Scheer lost a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Moise Habienza in the No. 1 singles match. Habienza then teamed up with Roy Jensen for a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Scheer and Jayce Goergen in the No. 1 doubles match.

The Hawks are gearing up to play in a Class 2A district tournament next week.

“I love seeing my teammates succeed and their improvement over the last few weeks has been at such a high level that I know they will be ready for districts as well,” Scheer said. “No doubt we will be able to compete in districts, and I’m excited for next week.”

Here are the match-by-match results:

Valley 11, Ankeny 0

Singles–Habienza beat Scheer, 6-3, 6-3; Schwob beat Goergen, 6-1, 6-4; Galles beat Snyder, 6-2, 7-5; Sura beat Schon, 6-2, 6-0; Myneni beat VanRees, 6-1, 6-1; Elmore beat Bush, 6-2, 6-0.

Doubles–Habienza/Jensen beat Scheer/Goergen, 6-4, 6-4; Galles/Myneni beat Snyder/Schon, 7-5, 6-3; Schwob/Sura beat VanRees/Bush, 6-3, 6-0; Elmore/Mun Thang beat Parkinson/Davis, 6-3, 6-3; Songer/Oakley beat Lee/Geren, 6-0, 6-1.
