The Valley boys’ tennis team is a perennial contender for the Class 2A state title.
On Tuesday, the Tigers had a chance to wrap up a different title–the outright CIML Central Conference crown.
That proved to be a bad situation for visiting Ankeny as the Hawks suffered their first shutout loss of the season, dropping an 11-0 decision.
“They are a very talented team and from what we have been put up against, I believe they are one of the best teams we have played,” said Ankeny senior Logan Scheer. “I’m not mad about how I played personally or how many of my teammates played.”
Valley finished 5-0 in the conference and improved to 10-0 overall. Ankeny’s records dropped to 1-4 and 5-4.
Scheer lost a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Moise Habienza in the No. 1 singles match. Habienza then teamed up with Roy Jensen for a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Scheer and Jayce Goergen in the No. 1 doubles match.
The Hawks are gearing up to play in a Class 2A district tournament next week.
“I love seeing my teammates succeed and their improvement over the last few weeks has been at such a high level that I know they will be ready for districts as well,” Scheer said. “No doubt we will be able to compete in districts, and I’m excited for next week.”
