The Ankeny Centennial girls’ tennis team earned some “small wins” during Tuesday’s rain-shortened meet at Waukee Northwest.
The Wolves built a commanding 7-0 lead before the remaining matches were called off due to a thunderstorm. They maintained their perfect records, improving to 7-0 in the CIML Conference and 9-0 overall.
Centennial’s records dropped to 2-4 and 3-7.
“We knew we were facing an uphill battle against the reigning state champs, but I am proud of the way the girls showed up and competed,” said Centennial coach Alli Gustafson. “We saw lots of small wins across the board, from strategic points and well-placed groundstrokes to longer rallies and smart decision-making. These moments showed the girls’ commitment to continuing to grow and improve each time they step on the court. We have a big week of meets still ahead of us, so we will be taking what we learned today into the next several meets as we close out the regular season.”
The Jaguars will host a conference meet against Johnston on Wednesday before closing out their league schedule at Urbandale on Thursday. The Dragons (4-0, 12-0) can keep their CIML title hopes alive with a victory.
