After dropping a 6-1 decision in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at Marshalltown, the Ankeny baseball team appeared to be on its way to a split after jumping out to a 5-1 lead in the nightcap.
It didn’t turn out that way.
Marshalltown rallied for seven runs in the fourth inning, then added three more in the fifth to post an 11-7 victory that completed a sweep of the twinbill. The Bobcats, who had lost six of their previous eight games, improved to 21-16 on the season.
Ankeny, which had won five of its previous seven contests, dropped to 16-15. The Hawks will play a doubleheader at seventh-ranked Ankeny Centennial (23-9) on Thursday at 5 p.m.
Freshman Samuel Andrews suffered his first loss in the second game, allowing seven earned runs over the first 3 1/3 innings. His record fell to 2-1.
Evan Lyons went 3-for-4 with three doubles and two RBIs for the Hawks. Brody Brecht scored two runs and drove in three more.
Eric Hayden went 2-for-3 with two doubles and one RBI. Mo Watson went 2-for-3 with a double and scored twice.
Will Johnson (1-2) took the loss in the opener. He allowed three earned runs over the first 3 2/3 innings.
Kade Somers went 2-for-3 with a double. Watson also doubled and drove in Cael Boyd with Ankeny’s lone run in the fifth inning.
