The Iowa City Liberty volleyball team got some revenge against Ankeny during the Caroline Found Invitational on Saturday at Iowa City West.
The 10th-ranked Lightning posted a 21-17, 19-21, 15-5 victory in the round-robin event. They avenged a loss to No. 3 Ankeny in the championship match of the Shirley Ryan Invitational on Sept. 5 at Mount Vernon.
Both teams went 4-1 on the day. Liberty (14-4) suffered a loss to No. 7 Iowa City West, which also went 4-1 in its tournament but lost to Class 4A No. 2 Clear Creek Amana–one of the teams that the Lightning defeated.
The Hawkettes swept all four of their other opponents on Saturday. They are now 17-3 on the season.
Ankeny rolled to a 21-6, 21-17 win over North Scott and also cruised past Class 4A No. 8 Ballard, 21-17, 21-9. The Hawkettes’ other victories came against Class 2A No. 8 Iowa City Regina and No. 11 Bettendorf.
Hailey Wiederin had 11 kills in the loss to Liberty. Elle Isaacson chipped in seven kills, while Marlee Ellison added four kills and eight digs.
Kellen Roush dished out 20 assists. Raquel Risk went 5-of-5 from behind the serving line and had one ace.
Quinn Roush contributed a pair of blocks. Katelyn Mescher racked up 10 digs.
Ankeny will travel across town on Tuesday to face No. 6 Ankeny Centennial (13-4) in a CIML Conference match. The Hawkettes won last year’s rivalry match at Centennial in four sets, earning their first win over the Jaguars since 2022.
