Ankeny wrestling standout Cael Cox has committed to Central College.
Cox announced his decision via Twitter on Wednesday.
“After lots of time and consideration, I’m pumped to announce I will be part of the Central College wrestling team!” Cox tweeted. “This opportunity would not be possible without my family, teammates, and incredible coaches. Go Dutch!”
Cox said he picked the Dutch over Simpson and Grand View.
“I chose Central because I felt like it was a great fit academically, and coach (Eric) Van Kley made it feel like home,” Cox said.
Cox was a two-time state placewinner who won more than 100 matches in his high school career. He placed fourth at 126 pounds as a senior after finishing sixth at 120 last year.
Cox, who posted a 27-7 record this season, helped Ankeny to a fifth-place finish in Class 3A. It was the Hawks’ highest finish ever under coach Jack Wignall.
Cox will be joining an NCAA Division III program that boasts a rich tradition. Van Kley has served as Central’s head coach since 2007, guiding the Dutch to a 113-95-1 dual record in his 13 seasons.
Central has also earned five straight top-35 NCAA Division III team finishes, including a 33rd-place showing in 2019 and top-20 finishes in 2016 and 2017.
