Former Ankeny Centennial tennis standout Alyssa Lewton is now a two-time American Rivers Conference doubles champion.
The Central College player teamed up with fellow senior Maddie Hartley of Clarinda to win the A-Flight women’s doubles at the conference individual championships on Saturday at Sioux City. It was a repeat title for Lewton, who combined with 2020 graduate Karleigh Schilling to win last year’s crown.
Lewton and Hartley won four consecutive matches by a combined score of 32-12 to win the tournament. They posted an 8-3 victory over Lexi Hastings and Renata Martinez of Luther in the title match.
“It’s the most consistent I’ve seen them play over so many matches,” Central coach Ryun Ferrell said in a press release. “They played aggressive and took away what Luther did well.”
Lewton and Hartley opened the tournament with an 8-3 win over Sofia Sackett and Anna Olimpio of Luther.
“They came out of the blocks fast in that match, and it set the tone for the rest of the day,” Ferrell said.
In the quarterfinals, Lewton and Hartley posted an 8-0 shutout against Emma Lassen and Jania Johnson of Coe. They then followed with an 8-6 triumph in the semifinals over the top-seeded duo of Anna Wanek and Emily King of Simpson.
“Simpson was playing at a high level, and we were playing at a high level,” Ferrell said. “It was one of the most entertaining doubles matches I’ve watched.”
Lewton is also a member of the Central volleyball team.
