The Ankeny Centennial boys’ golf team shot a 320 on Monday and placed ninth among 11 squads in the Valley Classic, which was played on a soggy course at Willow Creek.
The Jaguars replaced their usual lineup with a group of junior varsity seniors.
“These kids have been with the program their whole high school careers, and all of them got their first chance to play varsity,” said Centennial coach Andrew Reedy. “It was a fun day for them, and we set a goal of breaking 320 and shot 320 on the number.”
Drew Hansen carded a 76 to lead Centennial. Drew Chriswisser fired a 78, Jack Sobaski had an 81, Hudson Schulz shot an 85, Reed Wiese had an 86, and Logan Cooper finished with a 90.
“It was cool to see these kids compete and do their best in an environment they hadn’t experienced before,” Reedy said. “I am proud of how they competed and approached their rounds. They had great attitudes and gratitude for the experience.”
Norwalk shot a 275 to easily win the team title, finishing 10 strokes ahead of Waukee. Defending champion Waukee Northwest took third with a 290.
Dayton Poen of Norwalk carded a 67 to earn medalist honors. Jonathan Ward of Waukee was the runner-up with a 68.
The Jaguars will compete in the Southeast Polk Invitational on Wednesday at Copper Creek.
