The Ankeny wrestling team tuned up for Friday’s CIML Invitational by romping to a 66-12 victory over visiting Marshalltown on Thursday.
The eighth-ranked Hawks won 12 of the 14 matches and had eight falls. They finished 6-0 in the CIML Iowa Conference and improved their overall dual-meet record to 15-2.
Heavyweight Joe Kingston opened the meet by pinning Tristan King in 1 minute 39 seconds.
“Big Joe had a big pin and win,” said Ankeny coach Jack Wignall, whose team wrapped up the league’s dual-meet crown. “(King) has only lost a couple times this year.”
Ankeny won the first eight matches to build a 42-0 advantage. Eighth-ranked Truman Folkers followed Kingston’s pin with another one at 106 pounds.
“Truman is quietly putting together a great freshman year. He’s only lost twice,” Wignall said. “(Friday will be a) big night for him at the CIML.”
The Hawks also got pins from No. 1 Trever Anderson at 120, No. 6 Ben Hansen at 126, Devan Julich at 132, Xander Kenworthy at 170, No. 2 Cade Bennethum at 182 and Will Hinrichs at 195. Both Julich and Isaac O’Toole, who posted a 7-1 decision over Damien Rodriguez at 113, were inserted into the lineup to fill in for varsity regulars.
“Isaac wrestled a tough match, and Devan got his first varsity pin,” Wignall said.
Ankeny also got a technical fall from Lincoln Folkers at 138 and a major decision from No. 7 Jace Anderson at 145. Teagen Peiffer won by forfeit at 160.
Colton Ricken at 152 and No. 10 Gannon Williams at 220 each had a fall for Marshalltown.
The Hawks will compete in the CIML Invitational on Friday at Johnston. The action gets under way at 4 p.m.
