Ankeny softball standout Kendra Winfrey will be taking her dual-threat abilities to the Southland Conference.
The senior pitcher/slugger has verbally committed to play for Texas A & M Corpus Christi, an NCAA Division I school. She announced her decision via Twitter on Thursday.
“Headed to the Island!!” Winfrey tweeted. “Huge thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my journey!”
Winfrey, a hard-throwing lefthander, boasts a career record of 28-16 in the pitcher’s circle. She made her varsity debut as an eighth grader in 2019 and has been one of the Hawkettes’ top hurlers in each of the last three seasons.
After posting a 6-4 record with a 4.39 ERA in 2020, Winfrey went 12-7 with a 2.58 ERA as a sophomore. Then, last season, she compiled a 10-4 mark with a 2.38 ERA.
Winfrey also became one of Ankeny’s best hitters as a junior, when she batted .419 and started 35 of the squad’s 40 games. She tied for the team lead in home runs (1), doubles (8) and RBIs (40).
Winfrey was named to the CIML Iowa Conference second team for the second straight year after helping the Hawkettes to a 27-13 record. She was selected as a utility player.
Winfrey also competes as a thrower for the Ankeny girls’ track team. She was the Class 4A runner-up in the shot put last spring.
