Junior Cassie Johnson of Ankeny has verbally committed to play softball at Texas Tech.
Johnson announced her decision via Twitter earlier this week.
“RAIDER NATION, I’M COMING FOR YOU!! #WreckEm” she tweeted.
Johnson plays for the Iowa Premier Fastpitch travel club. She is a power-hitting catcher.
“I talked to a lot of great schools, but Texas Tech was by far the one that stood out to me!” Johnson said. “I looked at quite a few schools. But the environment of the Texas Tech community is unmatched. I also love coach (Craig) Snider and what he envisions for the future of the program! I am so grateful for the opportunity to spend my future there!”
Johnson played for the Ankeny High School team as an eighth grader in 2020, when she emerged as one of the state’s best young players. She helped the Hawkettes to a 19-11 record and was named to the CIML Central Conference first team.
Johnson batted .455 with eight home runs and 39 RBIs. She tied for fifth in the state in RBIs despite missing nine of the 30 games.
As a freshman, Johnson was ranked 40th in a top 100 ranking of the nation’s best softball prospects in the Class of 2024.
