The final results for Tuesday’s Jim Duea Invitational at Ames were not released until Wednesday night, but both the Ankeny and Ankeny Centennial girls’ track teams had some strong performances.
Dowling Catholic won the team title with 121 points. Ames was second in the 12-team field with 109.
Ankeny took third with 100.5 points. Ankeny Centennial finished seventh with 63.
“It was a great night to compete, and our girls got after it,” said Centennial coach Tyler Asbe. “We are seeing improvements in all areas and are excited for what the next month will bring.”
The Hawkettes swept the throwing events. Hannah Baier won the discus with a toss of 129 feet 1 inch, while Kendra Winfrey took the shot put with a heave of 37-11.
Ankeny also got a victory from Drew Beason in the 3,000. She posted a time of 10:13.78.
Beason was the runner-up in the 1,500 in 4:49.99.
“We had a great meet with multiple PRs,” said Ankeny coach T.J. Jumper. “The team really competed well and battled in each event. We are starting to see the benefits of the focus and dedication the team has had this year. It is also amazing to see them support each other and come together as a team.”
Reagan Hanfelt set a school record while placing second in the high jump. She cleared the bar at 5-6.
Lillian Smith added a runner-up finish in the 400 hurdles. She was clocked in 1:05.97.
Reagan Prendergast took fourth in the 800. She posted a time of 2:23.06.
“There are too many PRs to list,” Jumper said. “But Lillian PR’d in the 400 hurdles and met the Blue Oval Standard. She also ran the 100 hurdles for the first time ever and ran the fifth-fastest time ever in program history (16.24). Jayla Williams PR’d in the same event and ran the third-fastest time in program history (15.57). Sophia Graber PR’d by 50 seconds in the 3,000 (11:29.56).”
Centennial’s lone victory came in the long jump. Jaeden Pratt won the event with a leap of 17-4.
Teammate Kambria Leazer placed third in the long jump at 16-8.5. She also took fourth in the high jump at 5-0.
The Jaguars placed second in the distance medley relay. The team of Kacy Olson, Addie Pollock, Malin Vallejo and Camden Hershberger posted a time of 4:34.04.
Ankeny took third in that race. The foursome of Kennedy Palmer, Jennalee Leiker, Alice Oleson and Ainsley Kiene was clocked in 4:34.75.
Centennial’s Maddy LaVoi placed fourth in the 400 in 1:01.30. Rondi Quass finished fourth in the 3,000 in 10:43.86.
The Jaguars also placed fourth in the 4×200 relay. The quartet of Mya Crawford, Layla Hughes, Kylin Smith and Julia Flick posted a season-best time of 1:45.88.
“Our 4×200 team dropped 6 seconds off their best time,” Asbe said. “It was exciting to see that group click tonight and have such a big time drop–they were very excited! Our sprint medley and 4×100 teams also had season-best times.”
Both teams will compete in the Jaguar Invitational on Thursday at Northview Stadium.
