Ankeny Centennial junior Cate Trewet shot an 87 and tied for eighth place in the second annual Iowa High School Golf Showcase on Tuesday at Elmwood Country Club in Marshalltown.
Trewet was invited to participate in the event, which attracted a field of 40 of the top girls’ golfers across all classes in the state. She was only four shots back of second place.
“I’m super proud of how Cate played out there today,” said Centennial girls’ golf coach Marty Kiepe. “The Elmwood staff had the golf course in great condition, but set up extra difficult for the girls. When we played there a month ago, they played at 5,100 yards, and today it was stretched back to almost 5,800. Pair that with long and thick rough, and things can get difficult quick!
“Cate managed to keep the ball in play with no penalty strokes and only one three-putt. Not letting the bad holes snowball into big numbers was a huge part of her success today,” he added.

Trewet ended her high school season on May 20 by placing seventh in a Class 4A regional meet at American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown. She carded an 86 and missed qualifying for state by just one stroke.
“After not qualifying for state, it’s very easy to sit around and feel sorry for yourself,” Kiepe said. “Cate and I had a tough conversation about what the next steps are: feel bad for ourselves, or ‘get back in the lab’ as we like to call it. She’s taken no time off, and is ready to ride some of this momentum into the summer season. She proved to herself that she can hang with some of the best in the state today. The best is yet to come.”
