Ankeny Centennial senior Averi Porter has been named the recipient of the Karon Brown Award by the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union.
The award is a tribute to Brown, who served the IGHSAU for 43 years, most recently as the Senior Associate Director.
“I was aware that I was up for the award, but I was shocked when I heard that I was the loan recipient,” said Porter. “I’m honored and grateful to the IGHSAU for the honor and recognition.”
Porter has been a basketball and soccer standout for the Jaguars. She was named to the CIML Conference third team after helping the basketball squad to an 18-7 record last season while averaging 6.4 points and dishing out a team-high 84 assists.
Porter, who will play basketball next year at William Jewell College, helped lead the Centennial girls’ soccer team to the Class 3A state title last season. She scored both of her team’s goals in the championship game against Council Bluffs Lincoln.
Porter has contributed two goals and three assists this season while helping the Jaguars to a 6-5 mark. However, she has missed the last five games due to a knee injury.
Eighth-ranked Centennial will play No. 4 Ankeny on Friday.
“It’s been a little slower recovery than I thought, but I have started limited practice in hopes that I’ll be on the pitch Friday night in some capacity,” Porter said.
