For the fourth time this season, the Ankeny girls’ tennis team suffered a 6-5 loss on Monday–this time to Des Moines Roosevelt in a non-conference meet at the Waveland courts.
The Roughriders won four of the six singles matches, then added two more victories in doubles to raise their record to 8-4. Tenth-ranked Ankeny dropped to 4-7.
“We rested quite a few (players) in preparation for Wednesday,” said Ankeny coach Steve Smith, whose team will play in a Class 2A regional tournament at Valley in less than 48 hours. “I thought the bottom of my lineup played great.”
Ankeny’s Sophie Rohlfing won the No. 5 singles match. Teammate Satviki Gorrela also won at the No. 6 spot.
Those two players then teamed up for a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 doubles.
“Sophie is finishing her career out by playing the best tennis of her life,” Smith said.
