Racking up 24 pins along the way, the Ankeny Centennial wrestlers easily defeated three opponents on Saturday to win the Norwalk Duals.
The Jaguars recorded 12 falls in a 72-9 win over Knoxville. They had seven more pins in a 69-10 victory over Cedar Rapids Washington, then followed with five more in a 47-21 triumph over Norwalk in the championship match.
“This was the first year for this tournament, and they were a few teams short,” said Centennial coach Jay Groth, whose team is now 16-0 on the season. “But we went in there and wrestled well. The guys did some good things for us.”
Cody Vandermark at 120 pounds, Ethan Sodergren at 126, Isaac Bruhl at 157 and Ari Ehlts at 165 each had three first-period falls. Sodergren, a freshman, avenged an earlier loss by pinning Norwalk’s Aiden Moret in 1 minute 46 seconds.
“Ethan lost to (Moret) at the Keith Young Invite (on Dec. 2), but he just lit him up on Saturday,” Groth said. “That was good to see how much better he has gotten over the last month.”
Bruhl spent less than 2 minutes total on the mat. He pinned his final opponent, Norwalk’s Dominic Tigner, in just 15 seconds.
“Isaac is fun to watch,” Groth said. “That Norwalk kid is ranked, but Isaac pinned him so fast that I didn’t even see how he did it. I was talking to one of the other wrestlers and missed it. I’ll have to watch the film.”
Cale Vandermark at 113, Andrew Roland at 132, Max Dhabolt at 144/150 and Mitchell Grider at 215 each had two pins on the day. Dhabolt won his other match by a technical fall.
The Jaguars lost only nine matches on the day, including Cale Vandermark’s 3-1 setback to Norwalk’s Tyler Harper. Harper also beat Vandermark, 3-2, at the Keith Young tournament.
“Harper was a state runner-up last year,” Groth said. “But Cale is right there with him, and hopefully he’ll see him again.”
Centennial will host a CIML Conference dual meet against Ankeny on Thursday.
