Ankeny Centennial boys’ basketball standout Luke Winkel has been named to the Class 4A all-state first team by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association for the second straight year.
Winkel was joined on the first team by Ankeny star Carson Johnson, who was a second-team pick a year ago. Both players surpassed the 1,000-point career mark this season.
Winkel, a senior guard, was the fourth-leading scorer in Class 4A with an average of 21.4 points per game. He led the Jaguars to a 17-7 record.
Winkel made 40.3 percent of his shots from 3-point range (58-of-144). He led his team with 110 assists and 32 steals.
Johnson, a senior guard, averaged 22.9 points a game, which ranked second in Class 4A. He led the Hawks to an 18-7 mark and a trip to the Class 4A semifinals.
Johnson shot 46.8 percent from behind the arc (66-of-141) and 88.9 percent at the free-throw line (128-of-144). He also dished out a team-high 82 assists.
The other first-team picks were senior guards Redek Born of Norwalk and Mason Costello of Waukee, senior forward Cade Wilkins of Bettendorf, junior forward Davis Kern of Linn-Mar (Marion), and junior guards Trey McKowen of Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Curtis Stinson Jr. of Valley.
Senior forward Grant Tigges of Waukee Northwest and junior guard Zay Robinson of Valley were both named to the second team. Senior forward Joe Broderick of Dowling Catholic and senior guard Trovary Cavil of Johnston were both third-team selections.
All-substate team
Johnson and Winkel were also named to the all-substate team in Class 4A Substate 8 by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association. Johnson led Ankeny to the substate crown, allowing the Hawks to qualify for state for the third time in five years.
The duo was joined on the squad by senior guard Lio Aguirre and sophomore guard Rio Aguirre of Ankeny, senior forward Chase Schutty of Centennial, and junior guard Jahlil Manago of Waterloo West. Schutty helped Centennial to a semifinal win over Des Moines Roosevelt before the Jaguars ended their season with a loss to Ankeny.
Centennial coach Bob Fontana was selected the Substate 8 Coach of the Year. He was the Substate 2 Coach of the Year last season.
