The Ankeny Centennial boys’ golf team opened its season on Monday with a 12th-place finish in the Warrior Invitational at Glen Oaks Country Club.
The Jaguars posted five scores in the 80s and finished with a team total of 331. Kinnick Nelson led the squad with a 78, but was disqualified for not turning in his scorecard.
Centennial would have placed ninth with a 323 if Nelson’s score had counted.
Only two strokes separated the top four squads in the 17-team field. Dallas Center-Grimes shot a 294 to win the team title, edging Dowling Catholic by one shot.
North Scott and Southeast Polk tied for third at 296.
Centennial’s Bennett Lewis carded a 9-over-par 80. Charlie Knoll fired an 82 for the Jaguars, Nathan Grider had an 83, Max Gladson shot an 86, and Everett Bloyer finished with an 87.
Waukee’s Jonathan Ward fired a 4-under 67 to earn medalist honors. Jay McCausland of Waterloo West was the runner-up with a 70.
Centennial will host the Jesse Peck Invitational on Wednesday at Briarwood Golf Club. Ankeny will be among the 12 teams in the field.
