Former Ankeny basketball star Braxton Bayless has entered the transfer portal.
Bayless, a 6-foot-2 guard, appeared in 29 games for Niagara this season, averaging 11.5 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists. The grad transfer will have one season of eligibility remaining.
Bayless helped the Purple Eagles to a 16-16 record. He started only one game, but still ranked fourth on the team with an average of 25.6 minutes per contest.
“I’m looking to play my game and be myself like I was at Niagara–but in a starting role most likely,” Bayless said.
Bayless spent two seasons at Indian Hills Community College before transferring to Niagara. He played in 30 games and started 20 times as a junior, averaging 5.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists.
Bayless was one of three Niagara players to announce their entry into the transfer portal on Tuesday. Freshman guard Ahmad Henderson II and sophomore forward Harlan Obioha will also likely depart the program–although all three players would have the option to return.
“I’m looking for the same thing (I did before)–a school that values me and people I trust,” Bayless said. “Somewhere closer (to home) hopefully where my family can watch me more.”
Drake would appear to be a potential landing spot. The Bulldogs will be looking to rebuild after the departure of coach Darian DeVries and several players earlier this week.
Drake has yet to name DeVries’ replacement.
“If Drake recruited me, I would definitely consider that,” Bayless said. “It’s right where I’m from.”
