The Ankeny Centennial girls’ golf squad opened its season on Monday with a fifth-place finish in the Centennial Invitational at Briarwood Golf Club, while crosstown rival Ankeny took eighth in the 12-team field.
Gilbert shot a 320 to win the meet for the fourth straight year. Pleasant Valley was second with a 336.
The Jaguars carded a 381 on their home course.
“It was a nice day for our first 18-hole meet,” said Centennial coach John Petersen. “I was pleased overall with our players’ performance. We did not score as well as we were hoping, but everyone felt like they could have played better. So, now we definitely have things to focus on in practice.”
Isabella Steele of Pleasant Valley fired a 3-over-par 75 to earn medalist honors. Eden Lohrbach of Gilbert, the two-time defending champion, also shot a 75 but had to settle for runner-up honors.
Payton Drefke shot a 79 to lead Centennial. She placed third as an individual.
Brooke Ridout carded a 96 for the Jaguars. Kate Geiselhart had a 101, Cate Trewet shot a 105, Sophia Wilson had a 107, and Kaylee Sprecher finished with a 112.
Ankeny posted a 414 total. Gracie Block carded a 95 to lead the Hawkettes, placing 22nd overall.
Addison Smith shot a 100, Aubree Moeller had a 106, and Ava Sesker added a 113.
Both teams will play in CIML Conference triangular meets on Tuesday. Ankeny will face Dowling Catholic and Valley at Willow Creek, while Centennial will face Johnston and Waukee at Sugar Creek.
