Ankeny junior Dylan Victor ran into a tough draw in the boys’ Class 2A state tennis tournament on Tuesday at Iowa City.
Victor opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to third-seeded Anthony Schulte of Cedar Rapids Prairie. Schulte eventually reached the semifinals for the second straight year and went on to earn a third-place finish.
“I wasn’t really nervous since I already knew who I was going to play,” said Victor. “I definitely didn’t look forward to it, though.”
Victor then dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Anthony Medina of Iowa City West in a first-round consolation match.
“We are very proud of Dylan’s efforts in making it to state!” said Ankeny coach Ron Miller. “It wasn’t his day, mostly due to the quality of competition. I’m sure there were a few nerves playing in his first state tournament, but he gave a good effort.”
Victor said he simply didn’t play well enough to put some pressure on his opponents.
“I definitely did not play my best,” he said. “Nothing I was trying was working, which is unfortunate because I needed to play my absolute best. But the experience was good, and I look forward to getting the chance to play there again next year.”
