Ankeny Centennial wrestler Max Dhabolt is building a pretty impressive resume.
The sophomore-to-be earned a second-place finish at 150 pounds in the 16U Freestyle Nationals last week at Fargo, N.D. He advanced to the championship match before dropping a 10-0 decision to Jayden James of New Jersey, a returning freestyle national champion.
“I was going there to win it,” said Dhabolt.
Dhabolt solidified his status as an all-American with a 10-7 victory over Cooper Rowe of Minnesota in the quarterfinals. Rowe was the No. 1 seed and the eighth-ranked wrestler in the country.
“I think that was my biggest win ever,” Dhabolt said. “It was a very good tournament.”
Dhabolt then came from behind to win his semifinal match. He defeated Thomas Gibbs of Indiana, 19-12, to punch his ticket to the finals.
Dhabolt also earned a seventh-place finish in the 16U Greco-Roman national championships. He earlier placed second in the Folkstyle nationals.
