Ankeny football standout Lukis Beroth has been named to the Class 5A all-state first team for the second year in a row by the Iowa Football Coaches Association.
Beroth, a senior, was the anchor of the Hawks’ offensive line. He helped the team to a 6-5 record and a trip to the Class 5A quarterfinals.
Beroth was joined on the first team by teammates Ryan Harrington and LaMarious Clark. Ankeny Centennial stars Braeden Jackson and Reed Anderson were also first-team picks.
Harrington, a senior place-kicker, converted all 27 of his PAT attempts and 11-of-15 field goals. He also recorded 31 touchbacks on 45 kickoffs.
Jackson, a senior running back, led the Jaguars to an 8-3 record and a trip to the Class 5A quarterfinals. He ran 173 times for a school-record 1,397 yards and 22 touchdowns while catching 19 passes for 288 yards and three more scores.
Anderson, a senior linebacker, led Centennial with 83 tackles, which ranked sixth in Class 5A. He had 48 solo stops.
Clark, a junior defensive back, had 56 tackles for the Hawks. He led the team with five interceptions, which tied for second in Class 5A.
Three more players from both squads were selected to the Class 5A second team. They are junior running back Daniel Larmie, senior defensive end Andrew Haase and sophomore linebacker Dawson Whitinger of Ankeny, and senior place-kicker Ryan Bendezu, senior defensive lineman Mitchell Grider and senior defensive back Chase Kluver of Centennial.
Larmie rushed for 1,208 yards and 11 touchdowns on 186 carries. He also caught 11 passes for 56 yards.
Bendezu made all 52 of his PAT attempts, which set a school record. He converted 7-of-9 field goals.
Haase made 50 tackles and had a team-high 7.5 sacks. Grider had 48.5 tackles for the Jaguars.
Kluver made 16 tackles and had one interception. He saw most of his action at quarterback, where he completed 96-of-148 passes for 1,511 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Whitinger was selected to a defensive utility position. He led the Hawks with 88 tackles, which ranked third in Class 5A.
