A perfect season for the Ankeny girls’ bowling team came to an end on Thursday at the hands of another undefeated squad.
Ankeny dropped a 2,587-2,183 decision to host Waukee in a CIML Conference dual meet at Warrior Lanes. The Warriors are now 9-0 on the season, while coach Nick Payton’s team dropped to 5-1 in the league and 8-1 overall.
“It was a great crowd,” said Payton. “Both teams competed very well. I’m proud that bowling is an active sport here in Iowa, and it was good to see both teams compete.”
Kali Ogg led the way for the Hawkettes with a 369 series. Olivia Harris bowled a 192 in her second game and finished with a 332 total.
Johanna Shaw rolled a 286 series. Savannah Dye had a 259, Brooklyn Dietz bowled a 253, and Ava Johnson added a 211.
Freshman Katie Derdowski had back-to-back games of 222 and 202 for a 424 series to pace Waukee, which also got a high game of 248 from Wren Starmer.
“All season long, the girls have bowled well as a team,” Payton said. “Our team chemistry, our cohesion, working on the little things. I’m extremely proud to have two of the best teams in the state competing in the last regular season meet. It was phenomenal, and the support was phenomenal as well. I couldn’t be more proud.”
Waukee also won the boys’ meet by a score of 3,150-2,290. The Warriors are now 8-1 overall, while Ankeny’s records fell to 0-6 and 0-9.
George Inman led the Hawks with a 391 series, including a high game of 216. Preston Carr bowled a 291 series, Joel Hansen had a 281, Sebastian Cook rolled a 263, and Aiden O’Conner added a 245.
All six Waukee boys posted scores above 400. Colin Derdowski led the way with a 437 total.
The Ankeny teams will now be off until Feb. 12, when they compete in the conference meet at Game Day Lanes. They will then head to Bowlerama Lanes in Des Moines on Feb. 17-18 for a state qualifying meet.
“We’re going to work on some things,” Payton said. “I feel the girls right now are really strong as a team, and I think we can do a lot in the postseason. I’m excited to see where we go and how we continue to build for the postseason.”
