Junior Cate Trewet carded a 9-over-par 80 to lead the Ankeny Centennial girls’ golf team to a sixth-place finish in the Toni Dickey Invitational on Thursday at Otter Creek. She placed sixth as an individual.
Trewet has posted her team’s best score at all three of the Jaguars’ meets. She currently boasts a 43.6 average for nine holes.
Here is some inside info on Trewet:
Congratulations on your career-best round on Thursday. Did you make any long putts, or was it more just a matter of avoiding any big numbers?
It was a little bit of both. I had a couple of good putts, but really I was just trying to take it each hole at a time which helped me not make big numbers. I think a big key for me was avoiding penalty strokes and staying in a good headspace!
The meet was played under sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s. Could the conditions have been any better, especially since you’ve been dealing with a lot of rain and cold weather this spring?
The weather was great! It’s always a good day at Otter Creek when it’s not very windy. We have just gotten so much rain the course wasn’t quite able to soak it all in so it was a little soggy, but overall it was amazing weather!
I walked the first few holes and noticed too that the course was still pretty soggy from all the rain we’ve had. Did you run into any trouble because of water on the course?
Not really! I wasn’t getting any rollout of any of my shots so for most of the day I just was clubbing up.

You told me after the meet that you were playing in the same group with one of your good friends. Who was that?
I was playing with Divya Bhargava from Valley. I’ve known her for a long time, and she’s truly one of the funniest people I know. We played in summer tournaments together the summer before our freshman year and really have just gone through high school golf together. That’s one of my favorite parts of golf. Your competitors usually turn into some of your good friends!
What did you think of your team’s performance?
As a team we beat our team low from last year on Thursday, which was a big goal for us! I know we are still finding our rhythm since it’s so early in the season, and I really feel like our best golf is yet to come.
Your team finished 19 strokes ahead of Ankeny after losing to your crosstown rival by one shot at the Jaguar Invitational on April 13. Did you enjoy getting some revenge?
Of course! Monday was the second time in my high school career that I have lost to Ankeny. I have so much respect for coach (Kelley) Emke and her girls, but it always feels good to beat the Hawks.
Your team has a new head coach in Marty Kiepe. Has it been a smooth transition for you?
It’s been super smooth! Coach Marty has been really great! I was nervous about it because of how close coach (John) Petersen and I were. A big shout out to our boys’ golf coach, coach (Andrew) Reedy, because he kind of pitched that idea to coach Marty. Coach Marty has been great and definitely aligns with the standards we have always had for our team. Coach Marty and I are pretty similar in our competitive aspect as we both want to win, he knows so much about golf, and he’s just been super impactful to my game this season.

Other than your home course at Briarwood, what is your favorite course to play in the Des Moines area?
I’m super biased about Briarwood since I’ve grown up there, but I am also super lucky and have gotten to play lots of different courses in the Des Moines area. One of my favorites has to be Des Moines Golf. Their golf courses are always so well taken care of, and it’s challenging while fun at the same time!
Goals for the rest of the season?
I would love to be medalist at some point this season. I’m also aiming for a top-10 finish at conference, and of course, the ultimate goal is to qualify for state. Scoring-wise, I would love to break 80 this season.
Would you like to play golf in college?
Yes! I’m in the middle of recruiting right now! I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to meet with different coaches and see what’s out there.
Do you know what you want to study?
I’m looking to major in psychology with a focus on sports psychology. After experiencing burnout during my sophomore year, working with Codee Myers really opened my eyes to the mental side of the game. She’s been instrumental in my growth, and I want to provide that same kind of support to others. I know I wouldn’t be the athlete I am today without her, and I wish more people realized that the mental game is just as important as the physical one.
