The Ankeny Centennial girls’ tennis team earned a road victory at Southeast Polk on Tuesday to keep the Rams winless on the season.
The Jaguars got at least one win from every player in the varsity lineup. They improved to 1-2 in the CIML Conference and 2-5 overall, while Southeast Polk’s records fell to 0-3 and 0-6.
“Tonight was a great night of tennis!” said Centennial coach Alli Gustafson. “Everyone in the lineup earned a win in either singles or doubles, or both, and it was great to see the team competing hard from start to finish.”
Juniors Ella Sutherland and Laura Schulz earned praise from Gustafson for their play.
“Ella had a fantastic performance in singles, using a great combination of consistency and strategically-placed winners to take control of her match,” Gustafson said. “She then teamed up with Laura in doubles, where they showed fantastic grit and determination. After falling behind 1-5 in their second set, Ella and Laura refused to give up the set. They battled their way back, winning six straight games to complete a 7-5 comeback and close out the match in two sets. Their resilience and determination to finish strong were a great example of hard work and teamwork!”

The Jaguars will face Ankeny in another conference meet on Thursday at the Prairie Ridge courts. The Hawkettes are 1-2 in the league and 3-3 overall after falling to Waukee Northwest, 11-0, on Tuesday.
