After three games, the Ankeny girls’ soccer team has yet to allow a goal this season.
The ninth-ranked Hawkettes picked up two more victories on Saturday at the Bettendorf Invitational. They opened the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Springfield (Mo.) Catholic, then later posted a 6-0 win over North Scott–the No. 3 team in Class 2A.
“It was a big team effort,” said Ankeny coach Dan Bertsch. “We’re getting goals from all over.”
Alexis Legg had a hat trick in the win over North Scott. Morgan Bennett, Acacia Biehls and Ashley Harrington also had goals as Ankeny improved its record to 3-0.
“We’ve got a couple of key injuries right now with Riley Whitaker and Olivia Sharar both kind of nursing some injuries that we’re trying to take care of,” Bertsch said. “But the girls responded well, and things are looking decent for us right now.”
In the game against Springfield Catholic, a Class 2A powerhouse in Missouri, Harrington scored the game’s only goal midway through the first half. She was assisted by Chloee Kooker.
“It was just a great combination play,” Bertsch said.
The Hawkettes produced many other scoring opportunities, but they were unable to capitalize.
“This group is finding a way to have some chemistry in the attacking third,” Bertsch said. “We had opportunity after opportunity in the last few games. It’s just going to take awhile to start clicking.”
Ankeny will now have a few days off before traveling to Southeast Polk on Thursday for its CIML Central Conference opener.
