A seven-run second inning sparked the Ankeny Centennial softball team to an 11-2 victory over visiting Dowling Catholic in the Brent Prange Classic on Saturday. The Jaguars were slated to play three other games in the two-day tournament, but they were all cancelled due to rain.
Centennial defeated its CIML Central Conference rival for the third time this season. The Jaguars (14-8) extended their winning streak to four games while handing Dowling (4-21) its seventh straight loss.
Cassi Garland went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. It was her team-leading third homer of the season.
Franie Burnett also went 3-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI. She raised her batting average to .417.
Cassie Severson went 2-for-4, stole two bases and scored a run. Kennedee Jones knocked in two runs and scored twice, while Kayla Stone added two RBIs.
Anna Christiansen, Carleigh Kray and Marissa Meyer also drove in runs for the Jaguars, who are averaging eight runs per game during their winning streak.
Sam Klug (5-1) was the winning pitcher. She allowed just one earned run on six hits, walked one and had four strikeouts while going the distance.
Centennial will host eighth-ranked Johnston in a showdown for the Central Conference lead on Monday, beginning at 5 p.m. Both teams enter the doubleheader with an 8-2 record in the league.
