

A five-run fifth inning helped the Ankeny Centennial softball team to a 9-0 victory over Newton in its home opener on Wednesday.
Sam Klug (2-0) tossed a four-hitter and had 11 strikeouts in the non-conference game. The 11th-ranked Jaguars improved to 3-0, while Newton’s record dropped to 2-1.
Lizzy Klunder hit a two-run single to ignite Centennial’s outburst in the fifth inning. She scored on a single by Lauren Gustofson, who later came home on a wild pitch.
Morgan Severseike capped the rally with a single that drove in Addi Starr to make it 7-0. Severseike went 2-for-3 and had two RBIs.
Gustofson went 2-for-4 and knocked in three runs. She had a two-run double in the sixth inning to complete the scoring.
Starr went 3-for-4 and had a double for the Jaguars, who pounded out 12 hits.
Centennial will play another non-conference game at Saydel on Thursday.
