Ankeny outfielder Mariah Parton has signed a letter of intent to play softball next year at Central College.
Parton said it wasn’t a difficult decision.
“I loved the small town atmosphere and family-like bond of the team,” Parton said. “The campus is gorgeous, and everyone is super supportive both in Ankeny and Pella. The softball team has a lot of talent, too, so I’m really excited!”
Parton helped the Hawkettes to a 21-17 record as a junior, when she played in 36 of the 38 games and started 30 times. She batted .379 with three triples and 14 RBIs.
Parton also stole 15 bases in 17 attempts. She was named to the CIML Iowa Conference second team.
“I only really looked at Iowa as another option if I didn’t want to play softball since I loved Central since my first visit,” Parton said.
Parton is also a member of the Ankeny girls’ swimming team. However, she said softball has always been her favorite sport.
“As much as I have enjoyed swimming since I was little, I didn’t consider it for college,” she said. “I’ve played softball a lot longer than I’ve been swimming, and I want to continue doing so.”
