Tuesday’s Fred Smith Hawk Relays showed that some of the smaller schools in central Iowa can compete with the boys’ track teams in the CIML.
North Polk won the 12-team meet with 90 points, edging runner-up Ankeny Centennial by six points. The Comets did not win any events, but relied on their depth to capture the overall crown.
Carlisle and Indianola placed fourth and sixth, respectively. Gilbert also competed and closed out the meet with a victory in the 4×400 relay.
The host Hawks placed ninth with 30 points.
“Our lineup was marginalized, and we held off on some athletes running for hope of good weather on Thursday,” said Ankeny coach Nick Nelson.
Centennial won three events. Easton Miller took the 110 hurdles in 16.00 seconds, and teammate Tyler Bruns finished fifth in 16.98.
Isaiah Valentine won the long jump with a leap of 21 feet 1.5 inches. Teammate Cole Grider jumped 20-3.5 to place fourth.
The Jaguars also captured the 4×800 relay in a time of 8:30.37.
Owen Gates was the runner-up in the 100 in 11.57, finishing just ahead of teammate Alec Schneider, who took third in 11.67. Ankeny’s Tyler Sickerson placed fourth in 11.68, and Aidan Adamson was sixth in 11.79.
Adamson provided the Hawks’ lone victory in the 200. He was clocked in 23.69, while teammate Jamison Patton was third in 24.01.
Cael Woods placed fourth for the Jaguars in the 400 hurdles, posting a time of 1:01.62. Sam Dietz was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 46-7.75.
Gabe Murphy took fifth in the 400 in 54.90. Mattai Cayton finished fifth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-8.
London Hershberger placed sixth in the 800 in 2:11.80. AJ Schermerhorn was sixth in the 1,600 in 4:45.30.
The Jaguars added third-place finishes in the sprint medley and 4×400 relays.
Both Ankeny and Centennial will compete in the Waukee Invitational on Thursday.
