The schedule didn’t get any easier on Wednesday for the Ankeny Centennial girls’ tennis team.
After dropping a 7-0 decision at defending state champion Waukee Northwest on Tuesday, the Jaguars hosted another unbeaten opponent 24 hours later and fell to Johnston, 11-0, at the Prairie Ridge courts.
It was the third consecutive shutout loss for Centennial, which also lost to visiting Valley, 11-0, on Thursday.
“Tonight was another tough battle for our team,” said Centennial coach Alli Gustafson. “Even against some of the best teams in the state, we continued to find small wins in each match, and I’m proud of the growth and fight the girls continue to show. Playing two of the state’s top teams on back-to-back days is never easy, but our girls continue to compete and learn from every opportunity.”
Johnston improved to 5-0 in the CIML Conference and 13-0 overall. The Dragons will host Northwest on Tuesday in a matchup that could decide the league title.
The Jaguars’ records dropped to 2-5 and 3-8.
“With our regular season coming to a close, I’m looking forward to seeing the girls continue to push toward their season goals and finish the season strong!” Gustafson said.
Centennial will travel to Urbandale on Thursday for its conference finale. The J-Hawks are 3-4 in the league and 7-5 overall.
The Jaguars will then play a non-conference meet at Ames on Tuesday to close out the regular season.
