The Ankeny Centennial boys’ golf team shot a 306 on its home course at Briarwood Golf Club on Wednesday, matching its score from the Jesse Peck Invitational last month.
It wasn’t good enough to beat two of the Jaguars’ rivals in the CIML Conference.
Dowling Catholic posted a 284 total to win the triangular meet. Johnston shot a 293 and came away with a split.
“We had a good start, but we finished poorly,” said Centennial coach Andrew Reedy. “We are better than that score; we just made some mistakes that cost us down the stretch today. But I’m grateful we get a chance right away (Thursday) to redeem ourselves.”
Dowling’s Elijah Anderson carded a 4-under-par 68 to earn medalist honors. The Maroons improved to 5-1 in the conference.
Lucas Laffoon of Johnston was the runner-up with a 69. It was the first CIML triangular for the Dragons (1-1).
Everett Bloyer fired a 73 to lead the Jaguars (1-3). He carded rounds of 74 and 73 in his previous two meets.
“Everett played great again today and has been playing great as of late,” Reedy said.
Centennial’s Charlie Knoll shot a 77, while Max Gladson and Ricky Beckwith each had a 78. Kinnick Nelson carded an 81, and Nathan Grider added an 82.
“Some of those guys had really good stretches; they just had some mistakes that cost them,” Reedy said. “Ricky had it to 1-under through seven holes and then made some mistakes, but we had lots of bright spots from everyone in the lineup. I’m excited for (Thursday).”
The Jaguars will face Waukee and Urbandale in another conference triangular meet on Thursday. The J-Hawks will host the meet at the Urbandale Golf and Country Club.
