After having Monday’s Turk Bowman Invitational at Ames postponed due to a wet course, the Ankeny girls’ golf team got a chance to play Tuesday against one of the state’s best squads.
Unfortunately, the Hawkettes couldn’t take advantage of the nice conditions.
Ankeny traveled to Marshalltown to face the third-ranked Bobcats and dropped a 167-212 decision in a CIML Iowa Conference dual meet at Elmwood Country Club.
“While the weather was finally a good day for some golf, we certainly struggled on a difficult course,” said Ankeny coach Seth Hagarty. “We know we need to continue to work on specific parts of the game, so we can start to improve our scores!”
Marshalltown’s Amber Henson carded a 3-over-par 38 to earn medalist honors. Her sister, Natalie, was the runner-up with a 40.
Olivia Froehlich shot a 51 to lead Ankeny. Jori Webb, who played for the Hawkettes’ junior varsity squad, also had a 51.
Gabby Schnepf fired a 52, while Naomi SchraderBachar had a 53. Isabella Ross carded a 56, Addison Smith had a 58, and Gia Blaser added a 59.
Marshalltown raised its record to 2-0 in the conference. The Hawkettes dropped to 1-2.
“Golf might be the most humbling sport as one day you can have the best round you’ve ever played, and the next day nothing is going right,” Hagarty said. “So we just have to flush it and move on and focus on improving!”
Ankeny will play in the Lamson Invitational on Friday at Willow Creek.
