Friday’s Lamson Invitational at Willow Creek Golf Course featured a showdown between the top three girls’ golf teams in Class 4A.
Top-ranked Pleasant Valley won the 13-team meet with a score of 313, edging No. 2 Valley–the host team–by four strokes. No. 3 Marshalltown finished third with a 330.
Ankeny shot a 387 to place ninth.
“I was very excited to see some of the little things that we’ve been working on at practice start to pay off,” said Ankeny coach Seth Hagarty. “That is our best 18-hole score this season, and we had four girls under 100 which hasn’t happened yet.
“And somehow the weather actually ended up being a pretty decent day! The rain stayed away, the sun came out and it was a great day for some golf!” he added.
Gabby Schnepf carded a 93 to lead the Hawkettes. Gia Blaser fired a 96, while Isabella Ross and Naomi SchraderBachar each shot a 99.
Olivia Froehlich had a 102. Addison Smith added a 107.
“It was great to see the improvement and the best part is, we know we can still keep getting better and going lower,” Hagarty said. “As we turn the calendar to May, our goal is to be playing our best golf at the end of the season and all signs are pointing in that direction!”
Marshalltown standout Amber Henson carded a 7-under-par 66 to earn medalist honors. She made an eagle on the par-5, No. 12 hole along with five birdies.
Henson set a school record as well as a meet record. She also set the course record for a women’s golfer.
Rylee Heryford of Newton was the runner-up with a 73.
Ankeny will travel to Mason City on Monday for a CIML Iowa Conference dual meet at the Mason City Country Club.
