Monday’s Waukee Invitational at Beaver Creek Golf Course was played under some adverse conditions.
The field of 58 girls’ golfers had to deal with temperatures that soared into the 90s, as well as high humidity, gusty winds and a wet course that was soaked by rain over the weekend.
“It was our first hot day to play golf!” said Ankeny Centennial coach John Petersen. “We were happy with our play. The high winds and very wet course made for difficult scoring conditions.”
Centennial placed fourth in the 11-team field. The Jaguars posted a score of 374.
Ankeny finished ninth with a 413 total.
“Today was just the first day of three that we play this week, so we talked a lot about staying positive today, despite the heat, humidity and wet conditions,” said Ankeny coach Seth Hagarty. “And the girls all did just that!”
Second-ranked Valley shot a 337 to capture the team title for the fourth straight time. The Tigers also won the crown in 2018 at Lake Panorama and 2019 at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club before the tournament moved last year to Beaver Creek after the 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
No. 3 Marshalltown took second with a 356. No. 7 Southeast Polk finished third with a 366.
Payton Drefke carded an 86 to lead Centennial. She placed fourth overall.
Kaitlyn Ault took eighth for the Jaguars with a 90.
“I thought our girls handled the conditions very well,” Petersen said. “It was great with Payton placing fourth and Kaitlyn earning her first top-10 finish.”
Centennial’s Vivian Wilson fired a 95. Olivia Joensen had a 103, Grace Miller carded a 118, and Samantha Lazear finished with a 120.
Naomi SchraderBachar shot a 95 to lead the Hawkettes. Addison Smith fired a 104, Olivia Froehlich and Isabella Ross each had a 107, Jori Webb carded a 108, and Gia Blaser added a 113.
“The girls were certainly wiped out by the end of their rounds, but everyone had great moments today that we can continue to build on for the rest of the week!” Hagarty said.
Marshalltown’s Amber Henson carded a 3-over-par 75 to earn medalist honors. Hallie Yates of Valley was the runner-up with a 77.
Both Ankeny and Centennial will compete in the CIML Iowa Conference meet on Tuesday at The Legacy Golf Club in Norwalk.
