Despite using only four players, the Ankeny girls’ golf team placed fifth in the Southeast Polk Invitational on Monday at Copper Creek.
The Hawkettes posted a score of 394. It was their first sub-400 round since April 29 at Willow Creek, where Ankeny will return on Wednesday for a Class 4A regional meet.
“I was very excited for the girls,” said Ankeny coach Seth Hagarty. “They played very well on a gorgeous day to play some golf.”
Second-ranked Valley won the eight-team tournament for the fourth consecutive time. The Tigers shot a 312 to finish 33 strokes ahead of Southeast Polk.
Valley’s Hallie Yates carded a 3-under-par 68 to earn medalist honors by 11 strokes. Her teammate, Saffire Sayre, was the runner-up with a 79.
Naomi SchraderBachar fired a 90 to lead the Hawkettes. She placed 10th as an individual.
Isabella Ross took 19th with a 97. Addison Smith had a 102, and Olivia Froehlich added a 105.
“Naomi and Isabella both had personal bests today,” Hagarty said. “It was great to see the girls playing their best golf headed into Wednesday’s regional tournament!”
Valley will be among the teams at the regional meet.
