With a showdown against crosstown rival Ankeny Centennial on tap for Thursday, the Ankeny baseball players can quickly put Wednesday’s doubleheader against visiting Dowling Catholic behind them.
The second-ranked Maroons dominated the non-conference twinbill, rolling to 9-1 and 8-0 victories. They improved to 8-2 on the season, while Ankeny’s record dropped to 4-5.
Dowling’s Drew Mauro tossed a four-hitter with six strikeouts in the opener. Kaden Marso and Luke Sheridan then combined on a four-hit shutout with nine strikeouts in the second game.
Sophomore Trever Baumler had a big night at the plate for the Maroons. He went 2-for-4 in the first game, then hit a three-run homer in the nightcap.
Ankeny’s Brock Adamson (0-2) took the loss in the opener. He allowed three earned runs and had four strikeouts over the first five innings.
Reid Johnson tripled and scored the Hawks’ only run. Thomas DeBrower knocked him in.
Samuel Andrews (0-1) was the losing pitcher in the second game. He allowed just one earned run and had nine strikeouts over the first five innings.
