On another windy day at the Prairie Ridge courts, the Ankeny Centennial boys’ tennis team dropped a 6-5 decision to visiting Southeast Polk on Tuesday.
It was the first CIML Conference win for the Rams, who improved to 1-7 in the league and 2-8 overall. The Jaguars’ records dropped to 2-5 and 3-6.
“We lost 6-5, but we would have beaten them 5-4 (using the postseason scoring format),” said Centennial coach Tami Lewton.
Caleb Peterson, Nick Hiney and Brayden Wellendorf each won their singles matches for Centennial. Peterson was honored before the meet along with fellow seniors Connor Grim and Max Vernon.
“It was our Senior Night, and we played all three seniors,” Lewton said. “It was a great tribute night for them. Special recognition to Caleb, who has led this team for the last two years and is the only varsity player.”
Peterson also teamed up with Hiney for another win at No. 1 doubles. Wellendorf combined with Holden Smith for the Jaguars’ other victory at No. 2 doubles.
Centennial will host top-ranked Waukee Northwest (10-0) in its final conference meet on Thursday. Peterson will likely face Kaden Taylor in a matchup that could potentially determine the No. 1 seed for the Class 2A singles tournament.
