The Ankeny boys’ tennis team advanced to the semifinals of a Class 2A substate team tournament on Monday before dropping a 5-0 decision to host Mason City, the No. 7 team in Class 2A.
The tournament was originally slated for Friday, but was postponed due to rain. The Hawks finished the season with a 2-9 record.
“Mason City proved why they were the No. 1 seed,” said Ankeny coach Ron Miller. “We played hard and had so many deuce/game points, but we rarely came out on top. They have good tennis players from top to bottom.”
Ankeny posted a 5-1 victory over Waterloo West in the quarterfinals. The Wahawks finished at 1-15.
“They were similar to us in the past with a bunch of kids that focus on other sports,” Miller said of the Wahawks.
In the semifinals, Mason City (12-0) sealed the victory by winning the first five singles matches to be completed. The Mohawks will host No. 9 Cedar Falls in the substate final on Wednesday.
“I want to give a shoutout to Cale Josten who was in a car accident last week and probably has a mild concussion and Abel Zaragoza who filled in for him at the last minute and played well despite never playing singles before,” Miller said.
Here are the match-by-match results from the semifinal:
