Three days after her brother Caleb advanced to the championship match of the boys’ Class 2A state tennis tournament, Ankeny Centennial’s Abbie Peterson has accomplished the same feat in the girls’ Class 2A singles division at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Center in Iowa City.
The second-seeded Peterson rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Julianna Mascardo of Iowa City West in the semifinals on Saturday morning. She improved to 17-0 on the season.
Peterson will now await the winner of the other semifinal match between top-seeded Claire Gu of Valley and fourth-seeded Andrea Porubcin of Bettendorf. Gu is the defending champion.
Peterson will try to become the first state champion in Ankeny’s history. Caleb fell just short of reaching that goal, dropping a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Kaden Taylor of Waukee Northwest in the boys’ final.
