The Ankeny baseball team got off to a good start with a pair of runs in the first inning of Thursday’s game at Urbandale.
Then the 10th-ranked J-Hawks answered with a 13-run outburst in the bottom of the frame.
Urbandale went on to defeat the Hawks, 21-6, in four innings. The J-Hawks ended the game with a four-run fourth inning.
Sam Harris, one of the state’s top players in the Class of 2023, racked up 12 total bases in the win. The Duke recruit went 5-for-5 with a pair of home runs, a double and eight RBIs.
Urbandale improved to 3-5 in the CIML Conference and 11-7 overall. Ankeny’s records dropped to 4-5 and 9-9.
The J-Hawks pounded out 17 hits off three Ankeny pitchers. Nick Meyer (2-3) took the loss.
Karsten Bernholtz went 2-for-2 with a solo homer for the Hawks. Ben Sandvig went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
Carson Agan doubled and knocked in a run. Reid Johnson doubled, while Max Watson and Evan Irlmeier each drove in a run.
The Hawks will host a non-conference game on Friday against Council Bluffs Lewis Central (12-1), the No. 2 team in Class 3A.
